The British Columbia Conservation Service says the attack happened in the community of Bella Coola, about 700 kilometers northwest of Vancouver.

Nuxalk Nation said in a statement that “officers are armed” and people should stay indoors and away from highways.

The nation posted on its social media site that first responders and healers were at the scene of the attack.

The post warns the nation that an “aggressive bear” remains in the area.

“Don’t look for him,” the message said.

“It's understandable if you're feeling stressed and scared. Support is available at the youth centre.”

Saunderson says the victims suffered injuries that were “very serious, to say the least.”
