Grand Slam of Curling announces ‘Curl For Cancer’ in honour of Colleen Jones

The Curling Group has announced a new initiative to raise money for cancer research to honor the memory of curler and broadcaster Colleen Jones.

Money will be raised at every Grand Slam of Curling tournament, starting with the HearingLife Canadian Open in Saskatoon this week. On behalf of Jones, The Curling Group announced Tuesday, her 66th birthday.

“Cancer is terrible. Before she was diagnosed, Colleen was the pinnacle of health. She fought tooth and nail, but we have to pick up the pieces and find solutions,” Jones' son, Luke Saunders, told The Curling Group.

“Awareness needs to be spread; prevention is the key. Colleen's cancer was discovered late but she had great treatments and programs. It's hard to imagine mom not being here on her 66th birthday but feeling the support of the curling community and country helping. Kudos to the Grand Slam of Curling, all their partners and the Canadian Cancer Society for looking the disease straight in the face. This is just the beginning, fight cancer, unite and spread the word.”

Jones has competed in two Women's World Championships and six Canadian Women's Championships at the Tournament of Hearts. She has also been a reporter and weather presenter for CBC and a curling commentator for NBC in the United States.
