The latest version of the Google Play Store code introduces a new “try before you buy” feature for games.
In APK disassembly performed Android authority, In version 49.6.19-29, new lines have been discovered that not only show that there will be a “try before you buy” feature, but also that developers can set the amount of time that users get, be it minutes, hours, or several hours, completely free of charge.
The code now suggests that the upcoming feature will be limited to games on the Play Store for now. However, it is possible to assume that a similar free trial feature may come to paid apps as well.
The extra lines of code also indicate that users can “pick up where you left off if you decide to buy,” which could be a good strategy to encourage people to buy paid games on the Play Store if they have an hour of play time to see if a couple of bucks are worth it to them.
Also expected is a note that the trial version for each game can be used once per user, and if anyone tries to use it again, a message saying “you have already used the trial version” will appear.
Interesting, Android Authority notes that it will be interesting to see whether the new feature will also be used for “free-to-play games” with certain content locked behind a paywall, or whether it's worth paying for an ad-free tier in some games. There are games that already have this built in, but having it directly on Google Play can make it more accessible to developers.
It's unknown what this looks like in action, and it's unclear if Google has gotten the green light. But I'm interested to see if he makes it to the end.
