Google Search has a new plus button that allows users to upload images and documents for Artificial Intelligence Based Analysis by using Google AI Mode. Google hasn't posted an official blog post about the button, but says the change has fully rolled out to the Google Search desktop home page for US users in English. The plus button will appear for all users where AI mode is available later this week.
Uploading an image or document allows you to use Google AI mode, which Twins breaks down content into parts so you can ask questions about it. For example, if you download instructions for a model kit, you might ask where to buy certain parts online. If you upload a picture of a guitar, you might ask what pickups are used.
“You can now upload images or PDFs directly to the Google search bar on your desktop and ask questions about them using AI mode,” a Google spokesperson said. “This is another step towards making it easier for you to ask anything, no matter what.”
Advanced AI features are coming to Google Search as the company shifts entirely to AI in the face of continued competition from ChatGPT Produced by OpenAI. While the two AI players traded blows over features, the recent release Gemini 3 reportedly placed OpenAI in “code red” position. As a result, OpenAI released its GPT-5.2 a model that allows you to remain competitive.
Google's size gives the company an advantage. It may just offer more features per dollar than OpenAI, including terabytes of additional Google Drive storage for subscribers, as well as huge contextual windows when using the Gemini artificial intelligence tool.
Gemini 3 was also trained in-house by Google. Tensor processor chips, not Nvidia chips. This means the company is not dependent on a third-party chip manufacturer and can still produce high-performance AI models. Some observers are already saying that Google effectively took the lead in the AI race.
