What better way to advance one AI feature than through another? That's what Google appears to be thinking after the tech giant released an AI-generated ad promoting its AI-powered search features.
In its first commercial, created entirely using video platform Veo 3 AI, the company features a turkey named Tom helping people plan their vacation using AI mode in Google search. After receiving the prompt “I need to go somewhere with direct flights and no Thanksgiving,” which means “leaving tomorrow,” Tom is given destinations that don't celebrate Thanksgiving, such as Aruba and Cancun, each with their own brief description.
While the ad itself clearly has an uncanny AI sheen, there is no explicit mention that it was made using Veo 3. Instead, the video simply has a standard message saying that it contains “altered or synthetic content.”
That's the point, said Robert Wong, co-founder and vice president of Google's Creative Lab marketing team. said Wall Street Journal. He confirmed that the ad was created in Veo 3, but said it was not mentioned in the video because people “don't care” whether the ad was created by artificial intelligence.
But while Wong says the company will continue to roll out AI-generated ads, he adds that it doesn't plan to make every ad using Veo 3—at least not yet. As Wong predicted WSJthese ads will become more common as artificial intelligence becomes a more common tool like Photoshop.
However, Wong has not addressed long-standing concerns about Generative AI steals content from other peoplebe it individual artists or the intellectual property of companies. While Google will no doubt say they tried to prevent this from happening, it can't be guaranteed.
