Google could tweak Pixel always-on display to save battery

Google is reportedly working on a new fix for the Pixel's always-on display that could improve battery life.

Mishaal Rahman from Android authority looked a little deeper into the new Android Canary build and not only noticed a new flashlight brightness slider, but code in the settings app shows a new option for always-on display (AOD); “turn off display when inactive,” which, according to the code, “turns off the display when no user activity is detected to save power.”

Currently, Pixels already disable AOD when the phone is put in a pocket or turned over. However, it's unclear how else Pixels will define “inactivity” to disable AOD. Perhaps the Pixel's proximity sensor will help determine if a user is close to their phone. Activity tracking using a proximity sensor can also track how much time has passed since the user picked up the phone to check a notification.

Given the impact AOD has on battery life, it's no surprise that Google is working on additional tweaks (in addition to the visual redesign a few months ago). These new activity sensors can be useful when the device is idle during work hours or at night when the user is sleeping. We found a workaround This is the method that was used a few years ago and included the clock app, but now it will be an official option in settings.
