When Jerry Turner visited his wife Teresa Nist in New Jersey, he slept on the couch
When Jerry and Teresa got married, she gave no indication that she wanted to stay together as a couple in any fantasy number. Visiting her in New Jersey a week after their vows, he admittedly “felt like an intruder in her home, like I didn't belong here.”
This feeling only intensified when she asked him to sleep on the sofa as she had a big day of work in the morning. “Yes, no problem,” were the words that came out of my mouth,” he detailed, “but what I was really thinking was, ‘Why? We're married!
Teresa recalled another moment in “Dear Shandy”, saying that they did shared space that first night, but she stayed up all night because it had been so long since she slept next to someone. “He said, 'Oh, I can sleep on the couch if that's what you want,'” she said. “He suggested sleeping on the sofa. I didn't ask him to sleep on the couch.”
Either way, he remained couch-bound for three nights, returning to Indiana a day early. Jerry noted, “Once again, this was a very different Teresa than the woman I encountered in Costa Rica. At the resort, her approach to intimacy was comfortable, even brash. When we returned to the States, she ignored opportunities for intimacy.”
