Gloomy Eyes Review – Melancholy Magic in Motion

Gloomy eye overview

Gloomy eyes began life as a 2019 VR movie. With Colin Farrell as a storyteller, a 30-minute film was a story in the style of Tim Berton about a unique friendship between a child of a zombie and a human girl. It was installed in a constantly dark world where the sun disappeared. The film was charming and deeply melancholy, and an excellent window for short virtual films. Six years later, gloomy eyes are a game. This is better than, and not as effective as the version of the film.

Forbidden friendship

Mechanically gloomy eyes are borrowed by some mechanics from the latest cooperative games, such as It takes twoAlthough this is experience working with one player. This is translated as two main characters with additional abilities. The gloomy child of the zombie, capable of grabbing objects and throwing them, but he cannot stand or travel in illuminated areas. A human girl, no, can jump distances and switch switching and, most critical, can move around the light. Unfortunately, she cannot rise too close to the zombie, like gloomy. It is unlikely that a group of friends together to try to return the sun. Nena has an uncle, hating zombies and minions that add additional tension in history.

Although I would not call gloomy eyes joyful, there are mental topics that evaluate friendship, cooperation, sacrifice and the search for good even in bad situations. These ideas are held in the game, as in the film.

In addition to the narrative, which controls this, almost all five hours of gloomy eyes “Play time” is spent on solving environmental puzzles, finding and using objects or switching between two characters and their abilities. There are several sequences that are pure historical blows. Sometimes the narrative and study occupy the central place.

As the puzzles are coming, gloomy eyes are not too upset. Typically, an understanding of the solution is a lesser problem than managing the camera or the absence of some too through object or path. There is a rotating view of the diorama, which is great for viewing the scene as a whole, at least when you can turn it. One of the small disappointments of the game cannot rotate the camera during the usual gameplay. Sometimes finding a right angle for the release of an object or searching for an object is a picky test of patience.

Charm, hope and despair

The VR version of the gloomy eyes was dark, pursuing and beautiful, and the game is equally atmospheric. The game has much more details, and Diorama View offers the same type of exquisite miniature world, which made the VR version so convincing.

Part of what makes gloomy eyes feel like an eternal fairy tale comes through the narrative. It is written beautifully and voiced by Eric Nolan. Basically, the acoustic score of Niko Wasterlain is very weakly echoing both the music of Danny Elfman and scenes from the original virtual film. This perfectly corresponds to the tone of visual effects.

Losses and profit

Gloomy eyes – the game – is much more than an interactive film. This is a really new experience built from the same fundamental history and artistic. I suspect that very few players will see the film, but they should, because it fills some stories missed in the game. This is a compact fairy tale, and the short time of the film meant that not a single moment was wasted.

On the other hand, the stimulation of the game is completely dependent on the skill and smart players, and not get bogged down in the puzzle, killing the impulse of history. Sometimes it seems that the game adds more difficulties than the narrative can support.

In general, gloomy eyes are fascinating, charming experience. The additional abilities of its two main characters are allowed by interesting puzzles, and its story has a lot of heart, despite the darkness. I liked the film about virtual reality, but the game is an equally pleasant look at the ghostly small story.
