New Disney+ And Hulu sports comedy Chad Powers ranks first among the streaming service's most popular games. It stars Glen Powell as a failed sports superstar who finds success. Mrs. Doubtfire restore your reputation by joining the college football team.
Powell's character is a major part of the show's comedic talent, but honestly, the show couldn't survive without the rest of the cast. I'm talking about college trust chair Tricia, played by Wynn Everett, and team mascot and Russ' mentor Danny, played by Frankie Rodriguez.
Of all the characters in Chad PowersTricia and Danny are two colorful characters who, despite their seemingly inappropriate place in the world of college football and roles off the field, are two of the most important characters on the show.
From being an authority figure in sports to mentoring the team's star player, here's what actors Everett and Rodriguez reveal about their personalities and what they think makes them so special.
From one icon…
Trisha is truly larger than life and her fierce personality shines through from the moment she appears on screen. Everett shows that there are many sides to Tricia, which is a reflection of the many women who inspired her character. “Trisha is inspired by about ten different women that I grew up with in Atlanta, Georgia,” she shares, but there was one in particular who drew inspiration from her, she said.
“My mom is very Southern. At some point she'll say, 'I'm praying for you, we'll pray about this,' and then 10 minutes later she'll drop something on me. But yeah, the women in my life are strong, powerful, incredibly Southern icons, and I just pulled from them and put Trisha together.”
However, the fact that Trisha is an iconic southern woman is only the surface of her character. In reality, she has a tight ship to navigate, which requires the absolute confidence of being the chairman of a college football team, a role where she is given more power than the men on the team. “I like the fact that she can put something in front of Coach Hudson, that I actually have a little more power than he does and that I have the ability to fire people,” Everett said.
It was in these moments that she was most comfortable, and it shows. “That's something that I definitely embody. I mean, I would never want to fire anyone anyway, but I love her motto in life and that she will accomplish what it takes to win a national championship.”
Apart from all the dramatic exaggeration that comes naturally to Trisha, the most notable aspect of her character is her role as an authority figure in the sport, which Everett attributes to the way she was portrayed on paper. “I don't really feel like I need to portray anything because the words were so perfect. They were given to me and (they) created this character, this woman, and I just tried really hard to anchor myself in her,” she said.
…to the next one
Tricia is an icon in her own right, as is Frankie Rodriguez's Danny, Russ/Chad's closest comrade on the show. When Danny isn't running around the field as the team's mascot, he's busy helping Russ maintain appearances by masquerading as Chad, creating an unlikely harmonious pairing.
“I think it's because there are two people who would never interact in real life, and their circles are so separate. So when you bring them together, it really is like an 'odd couple,'” Rodriguez said.
For the viewer, the contrast between Russ's rugged good looks and Danny's creative personality results in great character chemistry and brilliant comedic timing. Rodriguez offers his perspective: “For some reason it works because they both need something from each other,” he said. “And they're kind of each other's last hope for friendship, but they have a weird way of dealing with it. So I think that’s what’s funny about them.” But Danny is more than that.
Being the mastermind behind Chad Powers' disguise is just one of Danny's integral roles. Moreover, he is an important mentor. “I think (Danny) teaches (Russ/Chad) to slow down and not just hit the ball against the wall. I think Russ is a guy that goes on instinct and there's a lot of aggression in that. I mean, he's a football player! Danny just teaches him to think things through.”
On the other hand, Danny is as much a learner as he is a headstrong mentor, as Rodriguez puts it: “When Russ teaches Danny, I think it's the other way around. He's actually teaching him that maybe you should be a little more open-minded, so I think it's kind of a loop.” Their unique connection has just been explored, and there is so much room for even deeper evolution. Chad Powers second season.
