FSU’s Mike Norvell says Seminoles will win title in ‘near future’

As questions grow about his future in the program after another loss, Florida coach Mike Norvell doubled he believed the Seminoles would win the championship “in the very near future.”

Norvell was asked Monday what he thought about the program's trajectory heading into 2026 after FSU fell to 4-5 following a 24-10 loss Clemson on Saturday. The Seminoles are now 2-12 in ACC play entering 2024.

Norvell gave an impassioned six-minute response in which he defended his record while acknowledging that the results over the past two years have not been good enough. Florida State went 2-10 last season after winning the ACC championship in 2023.

“I am fully aware that the external narrative around our team is bad, and around me it is probably bad too. That’s normal,” Norvell said. “It won’t affect the work I’m going to come and do. I'm going to put everything I have into this team with hopes of winning a championship.”

“I did win a championship and we're going to do it again. We're going to do it here. It might piss people off. So be it. They're going to celebrate when we lift the trophy and it's going to be the belief that I see in our players, the belief that I see in our coaches, the talent that I know our players have and the guys that are going to be a part of it.”

“I actually won the championship [at FSU]and we're going to do it again. We're going to do it here. This might make people angry. So be it. … I have elite-level confidence in what's ahead. I know not everyone wants to hear this. I don't care.”

After a 20–13 away defeat Stanford Last month, Florida State athletic director Michael Alford said in a statement that a comprehensive review of the football program will take place at the end of the season. But that hasn't stopped fans from questioning the program's direction, especially after so many disappointing losses.

When Norvell arrived in 2020, the program was at its lowest point. He won the ACC championship in 2023, but the pain of simply missing out on the four-team College Football Playoff that season caused a ripple effect through the program.

Norvell, who went 37-32 in six seasons with the Seminoles, said Monday he fixed the program once and will fix it again.

“I have elite-level confidence in what's ahead,” Norvell said. “I know not everyone wants to hear this. I don't care. I know it will be and I am grateful for the opportunity given to me. I also understand that it wasn't good enough, right? And results matter, don't they? But we're going to take this step and get the job done.”
