From Sehitler to Armstrong: 10 female footballers set for breakthrough in 2026 | Women’s football

Alara MartyrsBayern Munich and Germany (19): Sehitler's move into the Bayern Munich first team came as no surprise and the creative midfielder has established himself as a strong player for Jose Barcala's team. She has three goals in the Bundesliga this season and sparked Bayern's comeback against Arsenal in the Champions League. Following her Germany debut in November 2024, she will be looking to establish herself as a regular in the upcoming 2027 World Cup qualifiers.

Julia GalliRoma and Italy (17): Galli is widely regarded as one of the best young Italian talents to emerge in a long time and became the youngest Roma player to make her Serie A debut in May 2024, aged 16 and one month. This season she established herself in the first team, scoring her first club goal in September and competing in the Champions League. Following Italy's sensational run to the semi-finals of the European Under-17 Championship last summer, the talented forward played a significant role in the subsequent Under-17 World Cup, winning the bronze boot. She will definitely compete at the Under-20 World Championships this fall.

Frida MukomaKansas City Current and Zambia (19): Mukoma has yet to feature for Kansas City Current since joining in March, but she is one of Zambia's latest exciting talents. She signed with the National Women's Football League club for an undisclosed fee from Zesco Ndola Girls before going on loan to Beijing Jingtan. The striker made an immediate impact on her international debut, winning the golden boot when Zambia won the 2024 Cosafa Women's Championship (South Africa's regional tournament) and will be seen at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Daniela GalicWhittje and Australia (19): Galic is an attacking midfielder who has shown great potential. She currently plays in Sweden for Wittsjö and made her mark in the second half of the Damalsvenskan 2025 season, immediately becoming a regular starter and scoring four goals and three assists in 13 appearances. She is yet to play for Joe Montemurro's Matildas, but with a successful Young Matildas career behind her, she will be keeping an eye on her to try and force her way into the squad for the home Asian Cup this March.

Paula ComendadorReal Madrid and Spain (18): Comendador has consistently been one of the most prolific goalscorers in youth football. Her exploits with Spain at both the Under-17 and Under-19 levels, including a silver medal, golden boot and silver ball at the 2024 Women's Under-17 World Cup, are an indication of the depth of her talent. She joined Real Madrid's senior team in July and has primarily played from the bench this season. She should add to her experience the Under-20 World Cup later this year and make her senior debut. Red surely won't be too far away.

Montserrat SaldivarClub America and Mexico (19): There is good evidence to suggest that Saldivar has already broken out in Mexico. Since making her debut for Club América at age 14, she has made over 100 appearances for Liga MX Femenil. The winger has been instrumental in Mexico's recent progress at youth level, being a constant presence on the way to the last 16 of the 2024 Under-20 World Cup and scoring eight goals in winning the silver medal at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship last summer. She made her senior debut in October 2024, and with the opportunity to play at another Under-20 World Cup and the inaugural Concacaf Women's Championship, where qualification for the 2027 World Cup is played out, the next 12 months could prove even more significant.

Vassa SangareLondon City Lionesses and France (19): Sangare's bright start to life in the Women's Super League was certainly noticed after the young French international joined London City Lioness on loan from Lyon. The talented centre-back has adapted well to the demands of the English top flight, earning his place in nine consecutive league appearances. Her success at youth level with France – winning the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the under-19 tournament the following year – led to her making her senior debut with a third-place finish in the Nations League knockout stage win over Sweden in early December.

Kaylee HunterAFC Toronto and Canada (17): The launch of the Canadian Super League North in 2025 has brought some of Canada's young talent into the spotlight. One of the leading players is Hunter, who was at the heart of AFC Toronto's success in winning the inaugural NSL Supporters' Shield, topping the regular season table and reaching the finals. A talented striker, she finished second in scoring with 14 goals and was named Rookie of the Year. Her performances caught the attention of Team Canada head coach Casey Stoney and she received her first call-up in October but has yet to make her debut.

Lucia KendallAston Villa and England (21): It's been a whirlwind three months for Kendall, who has found herself in the spotlight at the highest level. After moving from Southampton to Aston Villa and the WSL, her impressive performances in central midfield caught the attention of Sarina Wiegman. The debut followed the Lionesses' victory over Australia in October, where she was man-of-the-match. In her next training camp, she scored her first England goal against Ghana at St Mary's Stadium, home of her boyhood club, where she played for ten years. Kendall will undoubtedly play an important role in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as she looks to cement her role in the team.

Trinity ArmstrongSan Diego Wave and USA (18): Armstrong's debut season in the NWSL couldn't have gone much better. The center back established himself as a mainstay for Jonas Eidewall's San Diego Wave as they battled to make the playoffs. Mature beyond her years, she played 23 matches in the regular season and scored one goal. She represented the USA in the under-15s and was an ever-present for their third-place finish at the 2024 Under-17 World Cup. Her performances are sure to put her on the radar of Emma Hayes as she continues to attract younger players to the senior team.
