Co-creator of Doom and software id co-founder John Romero celebrates the iconic first-person shooter's 32nd birthday by discussing its origins, trajectory since launch, and thanking the fans who have supported it for so long.
“Today DOOM turns 32 years old!” Romero wrote about this on Twitter. “It amazes me how far this rebellion has gone in the game. We wanted to create the greatest game imaginable, and generations of players supported it. This is one of the greatest privileges of my life.”
Thanks to every fan who ripped, tore, explored every corner, broke every boundary, modified, sped up, created theories, shared stories and kept the inferno burning. DOOM became a phenomenon because you made it one. I am grateful to each of you. pic.twitter.com/7Lr1PrB6gWDecember 10, 2025
Romero also recently shared the great news that Romero Games, the studio behind his recently canceled FPS, survived the cancellation and is working on a new game that he said that “it will be something new for people, because going through the Elden Ring was truly a new experience.” Big words, but who better to back up such a statement than Romero himself?
