At least four people have died in a mass shooting at a children's birthday party in California.
Ten more people were injured in a shooting at a restaurant Saturday night in the upstate city of Stockton.
Local police say the victims include both adults and children. The condition of the victims is not specified.
The suspect is still at large and police say they believe the shooting may have been “targeted.”
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened shortly before 18:00 local time (0200 GMT on Sunday) and is appealing to anyone with “information, video footage or who may have witnessed any part of the incident” to come forward.
Spokeswoman Heather Brent called the incident “incomprehensible,” adding: “This is a very active and ongoing investigation and information remains limited.
“Initial evidence suggests this may be a targeted incident and investigators are exploring all possibilities.”
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi called the shooting “unacceptable.”
“Families should be together, not in the hospital, standing next to their loved one and praying that they survive.”
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States and has been challenged in recent years.
In 2021 federal judge overturns state ban on assault weaponsfor example, an AR-15 rifle.
Next year US Supreme Court expands gun rights as he struck down a New York law restricting gun rights, jeopardizing similar regulation in California.
