Former Obama Admin Official Says Trump Progress In Deporting Illegal Immigrants Is ‘Remarkable Accomplishment’

The former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called the number of people deported under the Trump administration a “remarkable achievement” Thursday on MSNOW.

President Donald Trump has issued several executive orders since taking office to combat illegal immigration and border security, including designation Mexican drug cartels, the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua prison gang, and the Salvadoran MS-13 prison gang as foreign terrorist organizations. “I have to say two things right away. First, the way the White House structured this immigration enforcement operation, with Stephen Miller running the policy and Tom Homan being the border czar but obviously very interested in ICE in the White House and then the governor, yes, that will create tension,” Sandweg said. “There's always a little tension between the department and the White House, but especially when you have three, you know, cooks in the kitchen, so to speak.”

“But I know these numbers are disappointing, but I have to tell you that this… this is a remarkable achievement. These numbers are stunning to me,” Sandweg continued. “When I look at, say, 600,000 deportations this year, they're all coming from the interior. And I think that's a critical distinction. When you do immigration enforcement, you're dividing the world into the border and the interior. And during the Obama administration, when there were 400,000 deportations, the reality is that about 250,000 of them were people caught right at the border. And that's not as impressive because it people trying to get into the United States. These are all people inside the country.”
