Former MultiVersus devs “try something different” with indie studio, Airlock Games, moving away from “horrific” AAA space

Directors Warner Bros.' The defunct MultiVersus has launched a new independent studio, Airlock Games.

Platform fighting game MultiVersus from Warner Bros. will close on May 30.after the president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels told investors that the game didn't work as expectedrevealing his “gaming business” […] falls significantly short of its potential.”

Now Justin Fisher and Brock Feldman, who were “fired eleven times between them,” have opened their own indie studio.

“Watching what happened in the Western AAA space post-pandemic has been absolutely terrifying,” they write on their website.

“Watching a group of legacy companies respond to emerging market problems by laying off tens of thousands of our colleagues (and us!) in order to prop up quarterly numbers. Watching them announce strategies that rely entirely on a dwindling list of overused IP, peppered with platitudes like “surprise and delight our fans.” Watch them run away from innovation like the plague. And watch them keep failing and keep doubling down.

“So, instead of turning to our next corporate hosts/future severance packages and saying, 'Thank you sir, can we have more?', we decided to try something a little different.”

The team's first solo game, What the Stars Forgot, will be released on Steam Early Access in December. A Kickstarter the campaign is currently underway.
