Flames making Yegor Sharangovich a healthy scratch vs. Jets

Calgary Flames make the forward healthy for Monday's game (Sportsnet, 9:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. ET) against the Winnipeg Jets, coach Ryan Huska told reporters.

The move comes after the Flames lost 6-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, dropping to 1-5 to start the season.

“Last game we were a 50-50 team, that’s the best way I can put it. The 50 percent of our guys that I thought really worked really hard and were dedicated, but I don't think we got enough from the other 50. And he fell into that category.” – Huska said on the decision to scratch Sharangovich, according to Postmedia's Wes Gilbertson. “You can't make 50 percent change, but we can change some areas that were unacceptable. It just so happened that it was him.”

Sharangovich, 27, has only an assist in the first six games of the season and is minus-3. He scored 17 goals and 32 points in 73 games last season, a notable drop from the 31 goals and 59 points he scored in 82 games in 2023-24.

His performance in the 2024-25 season earned him a five-year contract worth $28.75 million ($5.75 million AAV) back in July 2024.

Sportsnet analyst Kevin Bieksa criticized Sharangovich for failing to complete a check on William Karlsson late in the game during halftime coverage. Hockey Night in Canada.

“I would be completely crazy if I saw that on the bench,” Bieksa said.

“For me it’s a cultural aspect. I would show this clip at practice and say, “Where are my guys who care?” Play with guys who care. If you're going to get that kind of effort, get rid of it. You are a disgrace to the NHL with such efforts. Be a little crazy. I hate losing. This guy doesn't hate losing.

“You have so many good young players… you have a young core and you can’t poison them with this kind of behavior.”
