“Avatar: Fire and Ash” quickly topped the box office after New Year's, marking its third Friday at the top of the charts.
James Cameron's Avatar 3 earned $14 million on Friday, remaining strong and down just 38% from the same period last week. The sci-fi epic is expected to gross $36 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $302 million.
The procession is closed by a group of others, including “Marty Supreme“, “Zootopia 2“Anaconda” and “Maid”.
Zootopia 2 re-entered the top five on Friday, earning $7.1 million in second place. This is about 6% higher than last Friday. An impressive feat considering the Disney animated adventure film first hit theaters over a month ago. Children are still out of school for the winter holidays, which no doubt fueled the late-stage increase. The film is expected to gross $18 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $362 million.
Zootopia 2 recently became a Walt Disney Animation project. highest grossing film of all time with $1.46 billion at the global box office. The film surpassed another animated sequel, Frozen 2, which earned $1.45 billion in 2019.
“The Maid” came in third with $5.2 million on Friday, impressively mirroring earnings at this time last week. The Lionsgate thriller, starring Sydney Sweeney as a maid with a dark past, will bring in $13.8 million through Sunday for a domestic total of $74.6 million.
Rounding out Friday's top five were A24's ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme” and Sony's adventure comedy “Anaconda.” “Marty Supreme” came in fourth with $4.6 million, down 32% from last Friday. By Sunday, the film is projected to gross about $11 million for a domestic total of $55 million. “Anaconda” came in fifth with $3.5 million, down about 34%. The film is on track to gross $9.2 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $45 million.
