Fido and Virgin Plus have introduced improved bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) plans for Black Friday that match the offers Koodo launched last week.
Over the weekend, Rogers-owned Fido made the following changes, effectively cutting prices on some plans by $10 per month:
- 4G for $40/50GB with unlimited calls, texts and 500 international messages across Canada (previously $50/50GB).
- $45/70GB 4G with unlimited Canada-wide calls, texts, and 1,000 international texts (previously $55/70GB).
The new plans include 10GB of bonus data and a $15/month discount ($5 for autopay and another $10/month with the promotional discount). You can also get hotspot access for free, although it's worth noting that Fido used to offer a free hotspot by default in plans. until the feature became a paid add-on earlier this year..
Bell-owned Virgin Plus has made similar changes to its plans:
- $40/50GB 4G with unlimited calls across Canada and international texts (previously $50/50GB).
- $45/70GB 4G with unlimited calls across Canada and international texts (previously $55/70GB).

Like Fido, Virgin plans include a 10GB data bonus and a $10/month autopay credit. However, unlike Fido, customers get hotspot capabilities included in the plan.
While it's good to see the plans improving, it's worth noting that neither Fido nor Virgin offer the best plan value. I'd put Koodo's plans a bit ahead, since with Koodo you get faster 5G data (up to 250Mbps) instead of the 4G speeds (limited to 150Mbps) from the other two.
Besides Koodo, Virgin and Fido, there are even better options. If you live in an area where Freedom Mobile is available, you may have options such as $39/60GB 5G Plan for Canada/US/Mexico – this is more data and included roaming for almost the same price. owned by Telus Public Mobile also has some decent BYOP plans. if Freedom doesn't suit you.
Ultimately, the 40/50GB plans are a step in the right direction, but unfortunately Black Friday deals are still not good. Let's hope the situation changes later this week.
