Some Food and Drug Administration activities will be disrupted by the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1 despite the commissioner's earlier promise that business would continue as normal at the agency.
Weekly outbreak updates will cease to be distributed until government operations resume. The closure is due to the lack of funding legislation. The Senate failed to approve the funding bill on Sept. 30, the last day of the government's fiscal year.
In recent days, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said the agency would continue to operate as normal if the government shutdown because its duties are considered part of the job of ensuring public safety.
In its latest weekly report on the outbreak, the FDA made the following announcement:
“Due to the lack of FY 2026 appropriations or continuing resolution, only certain government actions will continue. While FDA will continue to conduct foodborne outbreak surveillance and response, the CORE Investigations Table will not be updated weekly during this time. FDA will continue to issue public warnings if actionable information is available to protect consumers from foodborne illness.”
The agency did not specifically say whether it would continue to issue recall notices. The link in the FDA statement was not working as of October 1.
