Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 Developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive have announced that a “major game update” is in the works for the game. Game of the Year Contenderreported in a press release. Creative director Guillaume Broche noted that the update was intended as a “thank you” [the game's] fans for their support.”
The update will include a new environment for expeditioners to explore, full of new enemies and “surprises” to discover. New challenging boss fights, costumes, and text and UI localization will also be included. In a video interview with Polygon, COO and producer Francois Meurisse mentioned that “portable compatibility” will be included as part of the update.
“I think fans will enjoy these new moments with their favorite characters,” Meurisse said. CTO and lead programmer Tom Guillermin told Polygon: “We continue to listen to the feedback people give while playing and try to take that into account. [feedback] in our roadmap,” he pointed to latest patch, including an invitation to try the battle againallowing players to immediately return to a boss fight after a failed attempt, as an example of the studio updating the game based on player feedback.
The announcement also featured new artwork ahead of the update. It depicts a variety of children's toys, including an Esqui figurine, scattered on a wooden floor. Those deep into the game will likely notice the Easter eggs hidden inside.
“The reaction to our game was incredible. We have spent years working on our dream project, and to know that it has resonated so powerfully with fans around the world is both wonderful and overwhelming,” Brosh said in a statement. “We are so grateful to our fans for loving the world we created, for sharing their own fan art and music covers, for wearing their best Baguette cosplay at conventions, and for the incredible support of our game.”
Sandfall and Kepler also showed Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 reached another sales milestone. Since its April release, it has sold over 5 million copies across multiple platforms. Its soundtrack has also gained popularity, with over 333 million (of course) tracks streamed across multiple platforms. During this period, it spent “more than 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical & Classical Crossover Album charts and even reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top 100 Albums chart in nine different countries.”
Here are the full details about the upcoming update, which will be available for free on all platforms. While the update doesn't have a release date yet, Meurisse told Polygon it will be coming “next month.”[s]” Chiaroscuro: Expedition 33 available now on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
• A new gaming environment that takes the characters of the 33rd Expedition to a completely new location, where new encounters with enemies and surprises await them.
• Challenging, new boss battles that players must overcome in the late game.
• New costumes for each expedition member, giving players even more customization options throughout the adventure.
• New text and custom localizations of games into Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 19.
• There are also more surprises in store for fans.
