Never before have I been attracted to the presence of a major Hollywood celebrity appearing in a video game. Who cares! Most of the time they don't do voiceovers, they just do the voiceovers, maybe adding their own face sometimes. And yet here we are with Matthew McConaughey, the man who happily gave my vote to some artificial intelligence programV Exodusa game that is essentially just another Mass Effect from some of the people who actually made Mass Effect. But! Said people would like you to know that McConaughey's performance is just him, thank you very much.
“No no. Everything that is in Exodus – 100 percent of what is in Exodus – is custom voice acting just for us,” explained Exodus Archetype co-founder Chad Robertson. eurogamer when asked if the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past actor was even created by the game's AI.
“He has a completely separate deal that he developed with Elevenlabs, which is one of the best-known AI voice generation tools that is used by other video game companies. So people can use his voice in a different way in non-specialized voice-over sessions. It has a set of really strict rules about how it can be used. The reason I mentioned this more is because even things like this take us by surprise because our interactions with Matthew are very specific.”
Robertson also touched on the studio's long-term position on artificial intelligence, which currently essentially doesn't have it, but “needs to be smart and smart about how we implement it ourselves” as the technology becomes more widely used. Regarding Exodus, Robertson also clarified that there is no AI in the game: “As far as the game is concerned, we have no plans to use generative AI for any elements of the game, but we reserve the right to change this if something requires it in order to get the game to the quality we want, or in the time frame or budget we want. But that's not our plan at this time.”
The current lack of AI personally doesn't convince me about the game right now. There's nothing particularly unique about this. Science fictionperhaps just expensive science fiction, which is often the worst and most boring. However, it will be a while before any of us know if this is the case or not, as the Geoffies trailer also hints at a 2027 release date.
