Ex-Eastern Michigan basketball players defy NCAA betting inquiry

at least three exes Eastern Michigan Men's basketball players have refused to cooperate with an NCAA investigation into questionable sports betting, college athletics' governing body announced Friday.

Several games from the 2024/25 season are under investigation.

NCAA in January, photographed the personal phones of Jalin Billingsley, Da'Shawn Nelson and Jalen Terry. The review was prompted by unusual betting activity surrounding Eastern Michigan's game against Central Michigan on Jan. 14, according to findings released Friday.

The players refused to participate in interviews and later told NCAA officials through a lawyer that they would not cooperate in the investigation. Three former Eagles athletes also asked that images on the phones be removed, the release said.

Failure to cooperate by three individuals is considered an NCAA violation and may result in permanent loss of eligibility. However, the players named in the investigation have already exhausted their eligibility.

NCAA officials noted that a lack of cooperation stalled the investigation because law enforcement officials were unable to determine whether sports gambling violations occurred.

“When individuals choose not to cooperate, especially when cases involve potential integrity issues, that choice can and will have serious consequences, including a ban from athletic activity, loss of eligibility and/or publicity in a violation determination,” the Division I Infractions Committee said in a statement.

Fox News Digital was unable to reach Terry Nelson. or Billingsley for comment Friday.

Terry's 16.6 points per game in 2024-25 lead the Eagles in scoring. Nelson, a former DePaul athlete who transferred to Eastern Michigan, averaged 16.1 points per contest last season. In July, Nelson reached a contract agreement with Swiss Basketball League Olympic basketball in Friborg.

Including three former Eastern Michigan players, 13 athletes from six different schools are under investigation by the NCAA for alleged sports betting violations.
