There's nothing under the sun these days that President Donald Trump doesn't see as an opportunity to attack blue cities and states. It's scary and annoying, but at the same time it starts to seem like something mechanical. He's a one-trick pony for fascism.
But once you put your Brown Shirts on the streets of several major American cities, threatening to disrupt a World Cup match or something like that won't seem so scary.
So nine months ago the ghost of Trump speaking he would consider moving the World Cup games out of Boston because Mayor Michelle Wu is a “radical leftist”, this might seem like a threat that packs a real punch, these days it raises more questions of “what else do you have?” a response of sorts from those threatened by Trump.
Yes, every blue city is a hotbed of crime, and yes, it's always the Democratic mayor's fault, and yes, antifa, and yes, street takeovers and blah, blah, blah. Do you ever get tired of hearing yourself say the same thing? When you declared that existence non-cash deposit is a “government-sponsored criminal activity” in Washington and New York, you've already turned the volume up to 11.
In the case of the World Cup, he doesn’t even just threaten like that…he literally made the same threats just three weeks agostating that he would move matches out of cities that were “even a little dangerous.”
Perhaps that is why this time around, various officials in the World Cup host cities simply seems to be yawning. Lisa Gillmore, the mayor of Santa Clara, California, responded to the threat to move things from San Francisco this way: “Any suggestion that Santa Clara is unsafe is simply not based on facts. We have been preparing for these games for almost three years, and we will be proud to welcome the world to Santa Clara for the World Cup next year.”
Gillmore also reminded Trump that the Bay Area has a long history of safely hosting major sporting events. Another unnamed official told Politico: “Our agreements are between FIFA and the host cities. These are agreements that were made back in 2017 and 2018. The bid itself was approved by the first Trump administration.”
Trump has tried to insist that he can achieve this because he has the ear of FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, who, like Trump, is corrupt nightmare. According to Trump: “If somebody is doing a bad job and I feel the conditions are unsafe, I call Gianni, who is phenomenal, and say, 'Let's take it somewhere else.' He wouldn’t like to do it, but he would do it very easily.”
Of course, let's say you convinced your buddy Gianni to pack for the World Cup and take part in the matches. away from Seattle, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia or… you get the idea. Will the World Cup be held in Little Rock? Boise? Bakersfield? Plano? This is childish nonsense.
Even more absurd is the claim that he could somehow punish Los Angeles. by moving 2028 Olympics: “If I thought Los Angeles wouldn't be prepared properly, I would move it to a different location if I had to,” although that would require “a different kind of permission.”

Trump is still furious that he can't get the blue cities under control, but in some ways his astounding and illegal occupation of major American cities is saying, “We're going to take the Olympics away from you!” the threat seems much less serious.
Go ahead, host the Olympics! Take the World Championship! You're already terrorizing immigrants in all these cities and threatening to do even more! After spending months disappearing people on the streets of Los Angeles, do you really think screaming “NO OLYMPICS FOR YOU” is what will really win?
