Look at your friends who are super fans Quentin Tarantino. We are truly experiencing this. One minute, we're looking Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair re-released in theaters with a new animated chapter, and in the next one we defend our loyalty to the director because he accidentally criticized an award-winning actor Paul Dano.
When Quentin appeared on Bret Easton Ellis Podcast To select the 20 best films of the 21st century, he chose a film by Paul Thomas Anderson. There Will Be Blood at number 5. Cool, I thought. One of my favorite directors likes another of my favorite directors. Well, unfortunately, Quentin didn't stop there.
Pulp Fiction the director said that the film's flaw was Paul Dano. He said Paul was “weak sauce”, called him a “weak, uninteresting guy” and declared that he was “the weakest actor in SAG”.
Paul is rightfully an incredible and beloved actor, as evidenced by his roles in films such as Little Miss Sunshine And Love and Mercythat's why people were rightfully crazy at Quentin's.
Some actors came to Paul's defense, including Ethan Hawkewho shares a link with Quentin through his ex-wife, Uma Thurmanstar Kill Bill franchise and Pulp Fiction.
On The Joe Rogan ExperienceEthan defended Paul while offering a positive outlook on the whole bloody affair. “This is a great lesson,” Ethan said. “You know what, I don’t think Paul Dano ever knew so many people loved him.”
“Paul Dano is just living his life and he has to wake up one morning and find out that this director just attacked him and is saying these hateful things,” he continued. “But anyone who knows Quentin knows that he just talks and talks and talks…”
“Anyone who knows Paul knows he is a world-class great,” he added. “And all this love for Paul comes through, and there’s a great lesson in that. You don't have to worry about the negativity people send your way.”
“I'm sure there are great directors out there who think I suck,” Ethan said, sharing a story about how an unnamed director gave him a backhanded compliment. “Directors have their own opinions, right? They have very strong opinions. What do they have strong opinions about? About acting, right?”
“He talks about the film he would make. He's not talking about Paul Dano. He's talking about something else… Obviously, when someone says something hateful, they're talking about themselves,” he said.
“The highlight of it all is that I've worked with Paul a couple of times and I love the guy and I'm so happy for him. Every other comment has someone saying something nice about Paul Dano.”
When talking about Quentin's role in the industry, Ethan summed it up perfectly in the end. “He wouldn’t be a director if he wasn’t confident. That doesn't mean it's true,” he said.
So here it is! Paul Dano is an incredible actor, and Quentin Tarantino is just saying something to the side of him. We're still excited about Uma Thurman voicing the Bride in a new animated short, so they might be working on Kill Bill Tom. 3. I'm crossing my fingers that Uma and Ethan's daughter, Maya Hawke, is in on it too. Ten bonus points for Quentin if Paul Dano makes a surprise cameo.
