Greg McElroy made an unfortunate misstatement during his speech. College football playoffs broadcast Thursday night.

McElroy was the Sugar Bowl color commentator between Ole Miss and Georgia, where Ole Miss kicked the game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

However, long before that, McElroy tried to give credit to Rebels running back Kewan Lacy, but called him by the wrong name.

“I love the way Kyren Lacey runs.” McElroy said before you correct yourself.

Kyren Lacy was a former LSU wide receiver who committed suicide last year during a legal battle stemming from a crash that killed a 78-year-old man in December 2024. He was charged with careless driving – speeding and passing in a restricted zone – when a motorist swerved to avoid Lacey and crashed into another vehicle.

Looking back at sports gambling controversies through 2025, investigations by the NBA and MLB are leading the way.

Police said “numerous witnesses” told responding officers that the crash was caused by Kyren Lacey's driving. Lacey was charged with negligent homicide, felony death and careless operation of a vehicle.

Kyren Lacey transferred to Leningrad State University in 2022. He had his best season in 2024, when he recorded 58 catches for 866 yards and nine touchdowns and would likely be an NFL draft pick.

Kevan Lacy helped Ole Miss reach the College Football Playoff semifinals, rushing for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
