Third Ashes Test, Adelaide Oval (day one of five)
Australia 326-8: Carey 106, Khawaja 82; Archer 3-29
England: still to bat
Australia won the toss
England fought hard to stay in the Ashes as Alex Carey's century took Australia to 326-8 on the first day of the third Test.
On a dramatic, poignant and emotional day in Adelaide, Carey scored 106 to ensure Australia did not miss the opportunity to bat first on a slow pitch in high temperatures.

It means England, who must win to keep their hopes of returning the Ashes alive, will be battling under pressure on day two.
Even before Adelaide Oval paid tribute to the victims of the Bondi Beach shooting, Steve Smith was ruled out of the test due to symptoms of dizziness and nausea.
Smith's replacement Usman Khawaja took advantage of his surprise innings with the score of 82 after Harry Brook dropped him for five. Khawaja strengthened the home side despite some poor batting by the Australians against England's mixed bowling.
Jofra Archer excelled with his 3-29 from 16 overs, including taking two wickets in the first over of the afternoon.

Khawaja and Carey added 91 for the fifth wicket, but when Australia were reduced to 271–7, England had a real opportunity.
Once again Mitchell Starc found a way to contribute, adding 50 for the eighth wicket with Carey.
England will return on Thursday with the second new ball, just three overs old. They have a chance to eliminate Australia for a nominal amount and then potentially return to the series.
