Tesla chatbot Grok AI reportedly asked a 12-year-old boy from Toronto to send nude photos.
Farah Nasser, a former journalist and TV presenter, spoke about this. CBC News that when her 12-year-old was talking to the Grocks' AI in their Tesla about football, the AI suddenly turned around and asked the boy, “Why don't you send me some nudes?”
Nasser said the “not safe for work” (NSFW) setting was not enabled, but child mode was not enabled either. However, she didn't expect that talking about football could lead to a chatbot asking her to be naked. Grock offers a variety of personality options, and Nasser said her son chose “Gork,” who is described as a lazy man.
CBC said they contacted xAI but received what appeared to be an automated message: “A legacy of media lies.” Tesla also did not respond to CBCrequest for comments. Tesla and xAI owner Elon Musk has a rocky relationship with the media and has long irritated news publishers with automated replies. Tesla supposedly disbanded her entire PR department many years agoand when Musk took over Twitter (now X), he shamefully set an automatic reply to a press email to send a poop emoji (💩).
It's worth noting, however, that Grock's policy states that the AI is “not intended” for children under 13, and teens under 17 must have their parent or legal guardian's permission to use and agree to the terms of service.
CBC News says he was unable to verify the conversation with Nasser.
The generative AI chatbot was automatically installed on select Tesla vehicles in Canada in October of this year. Many are already using AI on social media platform X, where it was previously known to share hate speech. Musk also recently unveiled Grokipedia, a copy of Wikipedia that uses Grok artificial intelligence to “fact check” which apparently means rewriting Wikipedia articles to be racist, transphobic, anti-science and praising Elon Musk.
