The Montreal Canadiens are going through a very difficult period right now, having lost five of their last six games.
Last week, the Habs suffered two overtime losses (to the Flyers and Devils) before beating Utah 6-2 on Saturday night, and this week the Habs suffered three regular-season upsets that left them with zero points.
This is the first rough stretch of the season for the Habs, so you might think it's not the end of the world, but when you look at the standings, it may very well be the case.
Indeed, as things stand, the Habs have slipped to 6th place in the Eastern Conference, although they still rank first in the Atlantic Division in points percentage.
And when we look at the entire standings, we realize that only four points separate the Habs from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are in 15th place in the conference.
That's just four measly points between the Habs and the bottom of the Eastern Conference basement.
The Maple Leafs have had a poor start to the season, which explains their position in the standings, but even so, they are only four points behind the Canadiens despite having played one more game.
As such, the standings are extremely tight as all teams are currently competing in the East, meaning the Habs really have no cushion, especially with their current abysmal consistency.
Martin St. Louis' team needs to find solutions quickly and get back on track because if they don't, the Habs could be in for a very tough time.
If the Habs suffer two or three more losses in a row next week, it wouldn't be surprising if Montreal finds itself on the sidelines watching the playoffs instead of the Leafs.
In short, the Canadiens need to get their act together as soon as possible to prevent a complete rise in the standings.
