Dwayne Johnson says he had an “out-of-body experience” while listening to Christopher Nolan praise his performance in Wrecking Machine.
In early October, the legendary director sat down with director Benny Safdie to discuss the latter's new sports drama at the Directors Guild of America screening in Los Angeles. During the event, Nolan called the film “incredible.”before stating that he's unlikely to see a “better performance” than Johnson's portrayal of real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr in 2025.
Johnson, as it turned out, was in the hall – and was stunned by the kind words of Oppenheimer-Helmer. “It was the most inspiring thing anyone has ever said about me,” the actor said. Diversity recently. “As soon as this started to sink in, I had an out-of-body experience. I was sitting next to my wife. [singer Lauren Hashian] and I grabbed her hand so hard, and she squeezed my hand back.”
Despite Hashian's pleas to “actually talk like a human being” when he inevitably caught up with Nolan backstage, Johnson said he couldn't do anything other than hug. “I just gave him the biggest kiss on the cheek,” he explained. “All I could say was 'Thank you.' He said, “I meant what I said. Your performance was heartbreaking and the best performance of the year.” Then I hugged him again.”
The film “Crushing Machine,” starring Emily Blunt, chronicles Kerr's journey from amateur wrestler to UFC champion. It not only chronicles his life outside the ring, but also Kerr's struggle with painkiller addiction, as well as his tumultuous relationship with partner Dawn.
Despite a respectable 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film failed to do astonishingly well at the box office, grossing $20.4 million worldwide.
