Driver in fatal Anthony Joshua crash is charged

The driver was involved in an accident, as a result of which the boxer was injured Anthony Joshua and killed two of his friends, he was charged with dangerous and careless driving, police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi said in a statement Friday.

A vehicle carrying Joshua, Sina Gami and Lutz “Lutz” Ayodele crashed into a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway connecting Ogun State to Lagos.

The defendant was charged with four counts including dangerous driving causing death, careless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid national driving licence.

Joshua, a three-time heavyweight champion, was released from hospital on Wednesday after suffering a minor injury. accident injuries, which has raised questions about road safety in Nigeria. The boxer was released after being deemed clinically fit to recover at home, authorities said.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu wrote on X to express his condolences to Joshua for the loss of his friends.

“I spoke with AJ to personally express my condolences on the passing of two of his close associates, Kevin Lateef Ayodele and Sina Gami, in a recent accident,” he wrote in his message. “I wished him a full and speedy recovery and prayed with him. AJ assured me that he was receiving the best possible care.

“I also talked to his mother and prayed for her. She was deeply grateful for the call.”

Joshua was considered “stable” after the crash, Nigerian officials said. He suffered minor injuries but is otherwise fine.

“The vehicle transporting Mr Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in an accident in circumstances which are currently under investigation. Joshua, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and is receiving medical attention along with another injured person,” the Ogun State Police said in an earlier statement.

Federal Road Safety Corps spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide said preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle “exceeded the legal speed limit in the corridor, lost control while overtaking and crashed into a stationary truck” on the side of the road.

Joshua recently encountered Jake Paul in a boxing match, knocking him out. Paul said he was praying for Joshua.

“Life is much more important than boxing. I'm praying for the lives lost, AJ and everyone impacted by today's unfortunate incident,” he wrote on X.

Joshua is the son of British Nigerian parents. When he was younger, he attended a Nigerian boarding school, but returned to the UK after his parents divorced.

Joshua is a three-time heavyweight champion. He held the WBA Heavyweight Championship, the IBF Heavyweight Championship and the WBO Heavyweight Championship. He lost his titles against Alexander Usik in September 2021.
