Ex's agent NFL Star Doug Martin clarified the circumstances of his death on Monday, releasing a statement on behalf of the late player's family.
Athletes First CEO Brian Murphy said the retired running back was working with mental health problems days before Martin's family asked California authorities to get involved. Martin died on Saturday after the incident while in police custody.

“Privately, Doug struggled with mental health issues that deeply impacted his personal and professional life,” the statement said. “Ultimately, mental illness was the only enemy that Doug could not escape.
“Following recent media reports regarding Doug's untimely death, the family wishes to clarify the circumstances. Doug's parents actively sought medical help for him and turned to local authorities for support. Feeling depressed and disoriented, Doug ran away from home during the night and entered a neighbor's house two houses away, where he was apprehended by police. The investigation into what happened during his arrest is ongoing.”
Oakland police also released additional information about Martin's death.

“Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a home burglary in Oakland,” police said in a news release. “When the police officers tried to detain him, there was a short fight. After his arrest, Martin stopped responding to inquiries.
“Emergency personnel attended the scene, provided medical treatment and transported Martin to a local hospital where he later died.”
Police said they have been in contact with Martin's family since Saturday's incident and the situation remains under investigation.
Martin's death was announced Sunday. He was 36.
