In the magnificent Nobel Gardens I visited in Oslo this year, it was absolutely unimaginable to find American President Donald Trump alongside the great men and women who have won this prestigious prize.
This room of the Nobel Peace Museum turns out to be one of the most touching. There we find, surrounded by thousands of lights, each winner of this prize, considered the most important in the world.
We can read their history and their contribution to world peace, a contribution for which they were rewarded. During our visit, we were also able to visit a very moving exhibition dedicated to the organization Nihon Hidankyo, the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize winner, which advocates for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Testimonies and photographs of victims and survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were presented. We leave shocked. We understand very well the idea of awarding the Nobel Prize.
A sigh of relief
To create this prize, upon his death in 1896, Nobel bequeathed his personal fortune to those who “during the previous year had brought the greatest benefit to mankind.” The Swedish inventor and industrialist wanted to compensate for the damage caused by his invention – dynamite.
In 2005, the award criteria were tightened. With this prize we now recognize individuals or institutions who have dedicated their entire lives to promoting peace, human rights and democracy.
So the world breathed a sigh of relief on Friday when the 2025 winner was announced in Norway. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was chosen from 338 competitors, whose names are kept secret.
This is because since he came to power for the second time last year, that same narcissistic President Trump has dreamed of this award under the pretext that he would be involved in conflict resolution.
We would laugh at this if we still wanted, although we are all exhausted by the whims of this shameful creature.
Nonsense
But how can we imagine that such a vile and dark man, who seeks to crush opposing forces and terrorize the most vulnerable, could be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?
One of the billionaire's first decisions was to freeze funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This decision led to the closure of thousands of humanitarian programs.
According to UNAIDS, 6.3 million people are at risk of dying in the next four years if American aid is not restored, Amnesty International reports.
In addition to his obsession with deporting illegal migrants by any means necessary, Trump has threatened to take control of the Panama Canal and annex Greenland.
The President is singled out as an oppressor of the media, scientists, women, minorities, and so on. He is moving the planet backwards by pretending climate change doesn't exist. He is far from being an inspiring role model for world peace.
We must believe that there is still some common sense in this corrupt world.
