Ohio may have just picked up its first of two big wins over Miami this week.
Days before the Buckeyes and Hurricanes square off in the Cotton Bowl, where Ohio State is a 9.5-point favorite, Ohio State pulled off a stunning recruiting win Monday night when it landed and received a commitment from a five-star edge rusher. DJ Jacobs. The No. 1 prospect in the 2027 class, Jacobs committed to the Buckeyes live at CBS Sports headquarters despite a long list of high-level suitors, including Miami, which was the projected favorite mentioned in the announcement.
“Huge shock,” said Andrew Ivins, director of scouting for 247Sports. “Ohio State puts it all together and I love it. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is a perfect fit for Jacobs because of what he's done with the kids.”
Jacobs is the ninth player to commit. Ohio State during the 2027 cycle.
Miami isn't the only program wondering what went wrong with one of the best quarterback prospects of the modern recruiting era. Jacobs preps at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Roswell, Georgia, and is a dual Georgia commit. His father, David, played defensive back for the Bulldogs, and his mother, Desiree, played basketball at Georgia. Former Georgia coach Mark Richt is DJ's godfather.
“A cast-iron full-back with size, speed and strength who can wreak havoc on Saturdays and then Sundays.” 247 Scouting Athletic Director Andrew Ivins wrote his assessment of Jacobs. “Projects as future changes for the better for College football A playoff contender who can establish an edge and get after the quarterback.”
If Jacobs maintains his No. 1 ranking in the 2027 class, he will become the first guard prospect to maintain that ranking since the 2019 class.
