Disney, OpenAI reach three-year Sora, ChatGPT Images agreement

The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI reached an agreement for Disney to become Sora's first major licensing partner. Sora is the AI company's short-form generative video platform, which seems like it should be a cause for concern for the multinational media and entertainment company.

However, the situation may not be as bad as you think. The new three-year licensing agreement will allow Sora to create short, user-demanded social videos that can be shared by fans and will feature 200 Disney characters, including Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. It will even include props, costumes, vehicles and more. Additionally, the company will use ChatGPT images to turn a few words into generated images based on Disney intellectual property. However, the agreement does not include anything like votes.

Disney will invest US$1 billion in OpenAI and will be able to purchase additional capital.

Under the license, fans will be able to watch videos created by Sora on Disney+, and OpenAI and Disney will collaborate to improve the experience for Disney+ subscribers. The press release states that Sora and ChatGPT Images are expected to begin creating fan-inspired videos starting in early 2026 and will include the following characters: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, Mufasa, as well as characters from the worlds Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and much more; as well as iconic animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm characters such as Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, The Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, Yoda and many more.

The Disney and OpenAI agreement also includes a shared commitment to “the responsible use of AI that protects the safety of users and the rights of creators. Together, the companies will advance human-centered AI that respects the creative industries and advances storytelling.”
