Under a new deal with Disney, Sora users will be able to create short videos featuring characters such as Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, Iron Man, Simba, and characters from franchises including Frozen, Inside out, Toy StoryAnd The Mandalorianas well as costumes, props, vehicles and environments.

The ChatGPT image generator will also have official access to the same intellectual property, although this information has long been built into these AI models. What's changing is that OpenAI will allow Disney-related content generated by its artificial intelligence models to officially pass through content moderation filters and reach a Disney-sanctioned user.

Once the deal is completed, Disney plans to deploy ChatGPT to its employees and use OpenAI technology to create new features for Disney+. A selection of fan-made Sora videos will stream on Disney+ beginning in early 2026.

The agreement does not include any images of talent or voice. Disney and OpenAI said they were committed to “maintain strict controls to prevent the creation of illegal or harmful content” and to “respect the rights of people to appropriately control the use of their voice and images.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the deal a model of collaboration between artificial intelligence companies and studios. “This agreement shows how artificial intelligence companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to advance innovations that benefit society, respect the importance of creativity, and help their work reach huge new audiences,” Altman said.

From opponent to partner

Money opens all doors, and the new partnership represents a sharp turnaround in Disney's approach to OpenAI just a few months ago. At the time, Disney and other major studios refused to participate in Sora 2 after its September 30 launch.
