Director Rob Reiner and his wife found dead in Los Angeles home, AP source says

Actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were the two people found dead Sunday at a home Reiner owned in Los Angeles, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation.

The official could not publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Investigators believe they were stabbed and a family member is being questioned by investigators.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a request for medical assistance shortly after 3:30 p.m. and found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside.

Robbery-Homicide detectives were investigating an “apparent homicide” at Reiner's home, said Capt. Mike Bland of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Rainer has been in business for a long timeHe is one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, and his work includes some of the most memorable films of the 1980s and 90s, including This is Spinal Tap When Harry Met Sally And Princess Bride.

He played Mike “Meathead” Stivic from Carol O'Connor's Archie Bunker in the classic sitcom. All in the familycatapulted him to fame.

Relatives of Lear, the legendary producer who died in 2023, said they were shocked by the news.

“Norman often called Rob his son, and their close relationship was extraordinary to us and to the world,” the Lear family said in a statement. “Norman would like to remind us that Rob and Michelle tried every day to make this country a better place, and they did it through their art, their activism, their philanthropy and their love of family and friends.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Reiner's death a devastating loss for the city.

“Rob Reiner's contributions resonate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy while fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said in a statement. “An accomplished actor, director, producer, writer and active political activist, he has always used his talents to serve others.”

Messages to his representatives were not immediately returned Sunday evening.

The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner has been married to photographer Michelle Singer Reiner since 1989. They met when he was a director. When Harry Met Sally and they have three children.

Reiner was previously married to actor and director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at the age of 98, and Marshall died in 2018.
