Diane Keaton, quirky and iconic actress known for “Annie Hall” and “The Godfather,” dies at 79

Diane KeatonThe extraordinary actress, known for her roles in “Annie Hall,” “The Godfather” and “Father of the Bride,” has died at age 79, Dorie Rath, Keaton's producer and friend, confirmed to CBS News in a phone call Saturday.

Additional information was not immediately available. Keaton's family, which did not respond to requests from CBS News, has not issued a statement and does not plan to do so today, Rath said.

Magazine “People”which first reported Keaton's death, said the actress died in California on Saturday, October 11, citing a family representative.

An actress for over four decades, the beloved star thought she would become a singer. tell “CBS Sunday Morning” in February 2010: “I wanted to sing. I did everything I could to become a singer.”

Keaton was born in 1946 in Los Angeles. At age 22, Keaton appeared on stage in the musical Hair and then in Woody Allen's 1968 play Play It Again, Sam, for which she received a Tony nomination.

Keaton said her voice wasn't good enough and she moved into acting, making her first film appearance in Lovers and Other Strangers in 1970, and her early television work included appearances in Mannix, FBI, Night Gallery and Love, American Style.

She starred as Al Pacino's girlfriend Kay in the 1972 film The Godfather and reprized the role in two sequels to the crime saga. According to Keaton, the couple became romantically involved after filming the second part of The Godfather.

Keaton then rose to prominence through a string of films she made with famed director Woody Allen, beginning one of the most enduring on-screen partnerships of the '70s. She starred in the films “Manhattan”, “Annie Hall”, “Love and Death” and others.

She said she fell “hugely in love” with Allen from the moment she saw him.

“He was funny,” Keaton told CBS News Sunday Morning.

She was also romantically involved with Warren Beatty, who directed her and with whom she starred in the film Reds.

Keaton won her first Oscar for Annie Hall—an exceptionally rare win for a comic play—at the 50th Annual Academy Awards, and was nominated three more times: for Red, Marvin's Room and Something's Gotta Give.

Keaton never married or started a family until she was 50, saying she was a “late developer.” Keaton said that if she got married, she would have to “compromise too much.”

She said she wanted to try more adventures for herself and also said she was “scared of men.” She said she was always turned down and ignored. “I wasn't marriage material.”

When she was over 50, she adopted two children: daughter Dexter and son Duke. Keaton said she loved being a daughter and did not take on parenting duties until her father died.

“I had to accept that I needed to move on,” she said.

She continued to act throughout her life, with her last appearance being in 2024's “Summer Camp.”

Hollywood stars pay tribute to Diane Keaton

Tributes poured in for Keaton from fellow Hollywood actors after they learned of her passing.

In a post on social networks Bette Midler said“I can’t tell you how incredibly sad this makes me.”

“[Keaton] “It was fun, completely original and completely without guile or any competition that you would expect from such a star,” Midler, who co-starred with Keaton in “The First Wives Club,” wrote on Instagram. “What you saw was who she was… oh, la, lala!”

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton's daughter in Father of the Bride, said working with the legendary actress will always be one of the highlights of her life.

“You are one of a kind and it was a pleasure to be in your orbit for a while. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent and most of all your laughter,” she wrote.
