Diane Keaton of ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Annie Hall’ Dies At 79

Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, known for her iconic roles in films ranging from The Godfather franchise to Nancy Meyers' beloved romantic comedies, has died. She was 79.

Her daughter, Dexter Keaton White, confirmed her mother's death to NBC News. She said the family requested privacy and had no further comment.

Producer Dori Rath, who worked with Keaton on her last films, also confirmed the actor's death.

The cause of death was not specified. She was photographed publicly in late 2024 and last Instagram post was in AprilA collaboration post with retailer Hudson Grace to celebrate National Pet Day.

Keaton is survived by Dexter and his son Duke.

Keaton's legendary acting career spanned more than five decades, playing dozens of roles on stage and screen.

After appearing on Broadway in Hair, she landed her breakout role in the 1972 film The Godfather as Kay Adams, the wife of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), and then appeared in The Godfather: Part II.

Keaton's career included numerous collaborations with Woody Allen, including roles on Broadway and in the film versions of Play It Again, Sam and the film Sleeper. She also starred in Annie Hall, a role that earned her the Best Actress award at the 1977 Academy Awards.

She was later nominated three more times for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her roles in Reds, Marvin's Room and Something's Gotta Give.

Keaton has starred in several classic comedies throughout her career, including 1991's Father of the Bride with Steve Martin and the 1996 film. “First Wives Club” with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler.

Midler remembers Keaton with a tribute on Instagram on October 11, calling her “hilarious, completely original and completely devoid of guile or any of the competitiveness one would expect from such a star.”

Recent moves in Keaton's career have included collaborating with her off-screen friends Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda and Mary Steenburgen on 2018's “Book Club” and its 2023 sequel. “Book Club: The Next Chapter.”

In a statement, Steenburgen said: “Diana was a magician. There was and never will be anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love goes out to her family. What a miracle she was!!!”

Later in her career, Keaton continued to star in more comedy projects, including 2022's Mac & Rita and 2024's Summer Camp.

Keaton has written several books over her career, including the 2011 memoir Then Again.
