I'm two against two when I write about games set on the moon todaybut sometimes that's just how it is! This time we will talk about a recently released game called Descent Lunarisis a turn-based dungeon crawler RPG that the developers say is inspired by classics like Wizardry and Shin Megami Tensei. And to be honest, it really does seem like a game for psychos, which I would like to make clear here, I say with all the sincere love in my heart.
The descent of Lunaris takes us to the distant year 2070. Just when all good stories begin, a mysterious signal coming from inside the moon is picked up by mining operations. Said signal disrupts all the machines and electrics, causing most of the people at the mining base to kick the proverbial bucket. This, of course, brings in a rival set of “highly specialized operatives from around the world” who try to figure out what happened. This is where you come in!
It's up to you to decide who to include on your mystery-solving team. Different operators have different abilities, subclasses to unlock, and gear to tinker with. Different characters can be turned into allies or turned into enemies as you progress through the game's various dungeons.
While you seem to have some freedom of movement, this is literally a dungeon crawler – all grids, all the time, you also have the opportunity to look around a little more. The gameplay looks quite challenging too, a lot of skill points to distribute between skills, you obviously need to be very tactical.
Honestly, I haven't encountered dungeon crawlers before, it's just a blind spot for me, but damn, this one is a beauty. A really good mix of 2D character art, weird enemy appearances and environmental design, the kind of sci-fi that you might find a bit existential. You can definitely see where this is taken from the SMT school of weird vibes.
There is currently no release date available, but it is expected to release sometime in 2026. You can wishlist it on Steam. Here.
