DETROIT | After four seasons in Ottawa, Travis Hamonic decided to leave the rebuilding organization for another.
In reality, it's more of a team like the Senators that is at the tail end of its rebuild and can lay claim to a better future. That's exactly the impression the Detroit Red Wings give.
“I'm delighted to be here, so are my wife and my two children. Since I signed, this is a first-class team and organization. We're proud to be here, this is the original team and I'm really excited to put on the jersey for the first time.”
“There's a lot of similarities between Ottawa and Detroit. We have good young people who are good here. I think every season the players are getting younger and younger, it gives me a lot of energy when you're in a locker room like that with a lot of talent.”
It is known that Hamonic speaks French, he is from Saint-Malo in Manitoba, and it was in the language of Moliere that he answered questions Magazine. His father speaks French and he noted that he attended Louis-Riel College in St. Boniface, Winnipeg before playing in the Western Junior League (WHL).
Fever
Hamonic, who spends his summers south of Winnipeg, quickly realized the importance of his decision to join the Wings when he signed a one-year, $1 million contract last summer.
“When I signed, my family and friends were very excited to see me on the original team during its centenary season.”
At 35 years of age and 15 seasons in the NHL (he's entering his 16th), Hamonic is becoming an important resource in a fairly young locker room.
“If I can help, I will, I'm proud of my role at this stage of my career, whether I can help on the ice or in the locker room. There are players on the team who are closer to my kids' age than mine,” he notes with a laugh.
