Defender confirms he turned down summer move to Atletico Madrid

Atlético Madrid tried to sign a new right-back in the summer and they eventually brought in Marc Pubill from Almeria. However, he was not their first choice as Jesus Arezo was above him in the hierarchy of transfer targets.

Back in July it was reported that Atleti entered the race together with Athletic to sign Arezo from Osasuna, but in the end The 26-year-old football player ended up in San Mamés. However, he had the opportunity to join Los Colchoneros, which he explained in an interview AS Diary.

“Yes, it's true. I'm also grateful to them because it's a great club. I won't hide it, but well, I decided to come here, I feel very comfortable and I think I made the right decision.”

Arezo reacts to criticism of Athletic's transfer

Athletic had been interested in signing Areso for most of the year and they finally got their man in the summer. However, the defender was heavily criticized by Osasuna fans for joining their Basque rivals and he has now shared his thoughts on the backlash, which he has paid little attention to.

“My friends told me that I was criticized a lot, people teased me a lot, but I really stand by those messages that are bigger than people think, even within the club itself. Messages also from loving fans, a lot of personal messages that I received and in which I noticed a lot of warmth from Osasuna fans. Many people told me that they understand my decision.”

Arezo optimistic despite Champions League snub

Arezo was also asked about not yet featuring in the Champions League this season, with Athletic head coach Ernesto Valverde selecting Andoni Gorosabel against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.

“There are also Gorosabel and Leque, who are top-level players as they have shown here at Athletic. Gorosabel had a great campaign last season and Leque always plays great games, so that's completely understandable. I'm just focused on work and the games ahead.”
