As the leaves fall and smoke rises from the chimney, there's even more reason to turn to the nearest screen and watch these terminal studies, through fact and fiction, about baseball, therapy, rockets, blackjack and a very grumpy private eye.
●WHO Killed the Montreal Exhibitions (documentary premieres Tuesday, October 21st on Netflix)
“The death of The Expos is something of a big game of Hook“, says one of the many talking heads in this re-investigation. “Many motives. Lots of suspects. We have a long list.” Among the people and factors under endless suspicion for the 2004 demise of the disorderly embodiment of Quebec pride that was the Expos are owner Claude Brochu; team president Jeffrey Lauria; the 1994 strike, when the Expos were hailed as the league's best team; and last but not least, good old economics. Will the secret ever be revealed? The hope and passion for exhibitions is eternal.
Amazon Studios In “Lazarus,” Sam Claflin (left) is a psychiatrist who sees ghosts, including his father (Bill Nighy).
●Harlan Lazar Kobena (The series premieres with all six episodes on Wednesday, October 22nd on Prime Video)
Like father, like son, young Doctor Joel (Laz) Lazarus (Sam Claflin) I'm in front of you) talks to violent criminals as part of his work as a forensic psychiatrist. Unlike his father (Bill Nighy, Life), Laz is still alive. That doesn't mean they don't still confer, since his father is one of the ghosts who tell Laz about their unsolved cases. Even our protagonist in this new thriller begins to question his sanity: “You don’t think I don’t know I might go crazy?” – Laz asks the supportive but rather suspicious Sergeant Seth McGovern (David Finn, Here). It's a tough start. Add in the murder of Laz's sister 25 years ago, and the stage is set for some psychological games, several unsolved cases, and some closure between father and son.
●House of Dynamite (The film premieres Friday, October 24th on Netflix)
Acclaimed director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) assembles a fantastic cast for a script written by Noah Oppenheim (Zero Day) about the terrifying minutes after the mysterious launch of a rocket that could have been the beginning of the end of everything – nuclear war. The cast includes Idris Elba (Luther), Gabriel Basso (Night agent), Jared Harris (Insane Men), Tracy Letts (Motherland), Greta Lee (Morning show) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty). Take a deep breath before you press play because things are going to get very, very tense.
Netflix Colin Farrell plays the desperate Lord Doyle in The Ballad of the Little Gambler.
●Ballad of the Little Player (opens in select theaters October 15th, available on Netflix Wednesday October 29th)
Colin Farrell (ur.Banshee Inesherin) stars in this creepy character study. His great-looking, sharp-jawed Lord Doyle is a high-roller who visits Macau's casinos to satisfy his equally hungry urges to win and pay off his debts. The winding ride involves Fala Chen (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Tilda Swinton (We need to talk about Kevin). The film is based on the 2014 novel by Laurence Osborne and directed by Edward Berger.Conclave). “Happily Ever After” is not on the menu.
Apple TV+ Emma Thompson (left) and Ruth Wilson in The Road to the Graveyard.
●Down Cemetery Road (first two of eight episodes premiere on Apple TV+ Wednesday, October 29)
This thriller begins with two explosions: a literal one that blows away the house, and a psychological shock caused by the realization that a child is missing at the same time. The Neighbor (Ruth Wilson) Case) is desperate to find the girl and hires a private detective (Emma Thompson, Good luck, Leo Grande) to help. The complicating factor is that the PC is as jaded as she is talented. If the mixture of edgy character, sharp comedy and carefully crafted thriller sounds familiar, it's based on the novel by Mick Herron, who also brought us the spy series. Slow horses. Both of Herron's projects also include adaptations of Morwenna Banks. This is a promising pedigree.
