Upcoming Danganronpa 2×2 from Kazutaka Kodaka no way a remake of the delightfully psychopathic 2012 game Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, the visual novel legend highlights for GamesRadar+.
Kodaka, the ambitious creator of Danganonpa and incredibly huge 2025 strategy RPG The Hundred Linetells us that Danganronpa 2×2 is actually “a game that is not a remake of Danganronpa 2, but rather uses the characters in a new story and a new scenario in a new setting.”
So yes, both Danganronpa 2 and Danganronpa 2×2 send you as a student on a tropical vacation to the lush Jabberwock Island. Steam pages for both visual novels advertise That same screenshot – although the modern one is crisper and brighter in mango colour. And it's true that both visual novels allow the deceptively adorable teddy bear Monokuma to draw you into a game of mass murder. But it won't be the same mass murder, okay?
“We hope that we can see how fans enjoy these characters in a new, updated version,” Kodaka continues about Danganronpa 2×2, once again emphasizing that the game is “not a remake, but rather a retelling of the story” from Danganronpa 2.
However, Kodaka admits it was “nostalgic” to work on an unconventional murder mystery series again. He says: “Being able to work with characters from ten years ago and bring them back into a new setting where they can be used is definitely a nostalgic feeling. It brings back memories when I can keep working on it.”
Call it a comeback if you want. Just don't call it a remake.
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy isn't quite Persona XCOM, but it's perfect for watching on the Steam Deck..
