A suspected cyberattack crippled France's national postal service and its banking arm on Monday, blocking and delaying parcel deliveries and online payments at the height of the busy Christmas season.
Postal service La Poste said in a statement that a distributed denial of service (DDoS) incident “rendered its online services unavailable.” The report said the incident did not impact customer data but did disrupt parcel and mail delivery.
At a Paris post office, decked out in holiday lights and usually busy at this time of year, employees turned away frustrated customers lining up to send or receive parcels, including Christmas gifts.
Customers of La Banque Postale's banking division were prohibited from using the app to confirm payments or provide other banking services. Instead, the bank redirected approvals to text messages.
“Our teams are mobilized to quickly resolve the situation,” the bank said in a statement on social networks.
