Cumali Varer’s Journey to TV

For The film -boxes founder Kumali lastsEverything flows back to the sea.

Once a political prisoner, and then a sailor with a homemade, the Turkish performer arrived in France as an exile in the late 1980s. Having divided his time between Paris, Istanbul and Cannes, he turned passions for the first time caused during fishing in the Black Sea to life, which brought him from a sailor to one of the leading organizers of the Mediterranean International Regatta and ultimately to the producer, to make spray. MIPCOM With Korsan, a series of sea adventures, inspired by history, and as a result of salt water passing through its own history.

“I spent my life at sea, floating and studying its rhythms,” says Forer. “Now I want to bring this world on the screen, telling stories that are universal but rooted in culture, courage and beauty of the region.”

Before he founded Lazuri Film, Vareer built cultural bridges through sailing, organizing international races throughout Spain, France, England, Turkey, Greece and Italy. He honed his artisan, producing documentaries in French for Turkish television, capturing Mediterranean life and sport along this path.

At the same time, a random meeting at the Paris embassy inspired personal passion: the history of the Jewish exiles of Spain, intercepted by the Ottoman corsars and gave a refuge in Istanbul of the 15th century-and then the narrative of unshakable determination.

“This is the history of mankind and solidarity during a religious conflict and shocks,” says Forer. “This indicates the stable values of tolerance and cooperation, topics, as urgent today as in the Mediterranean of the 15th century.”

Vareer first developed this idea independently before uniting with the famous French screenwriter and employee of Luis Bunuel Jean-Claude Carrer. After passing the carrier in 2021 and navigation on the changing post-pandemic landscape, Vareer rethought the project as a series, securing the creator of the “barbarians” Andreas Hekmann.

Under the leadership of Hekmann, the script was turned into a more focused on action, an episodic story, drawing a central love triangle into a dynamic television drama. The recognized director Paul Wilmsherst, known for his “last kingdom” and “jackal day”, is also a set.

In 2022, Vareer officially launched Lazuri Film to Helm “Korsan”. He attracted the ITV Studios Fransois Florentiny veteran as a strategic consultant, helping to navigate the relations of distributors, a marketing strategy of form and assemble a production team, based on his extensive network in French audiovisual circles.

The project is now ready to swim. During advanced development and approach to preliminary production, the script is completed, the key crew members are on board, and the Spanish places were divorced. Written in English, the series is aimed at playing the actors of leading roles. First of all, French production, it can turn into the joint production of French Spain, with extensive shootings in Granada and Cádiz and potential partners already in negotiations.

A series of six episodes contains a budget from 24 to 25 million dollars, with pure financing from 16 to $ 17 million after discounts. The preliminary transaction with a large international distributor is at its last stages and is expected to launch immediate preliminary performance, and shooting is planned in Spain at the end of the summer of 2026.

Further, on the horizon, Lazuri Film is developing Groundtruth, a thriller with high rates, examining spying, ethics of AI and a global power struggle. Still in early development, the series is guided by the artistic vision of Vareer, although its main attention remains on Korsan.

“Tell this story today about the choice,” says Forer. “We can either make hatred or accept coexistence. We live in a world full of fear, separation and so -called clashes of civilizations. I survived the exile and difficulties, but this is not my personal story. It is universal; We all carry the past, culture, philosophy and from this, vision can arise. ”

Vareer also relies on his own experience to explain his approach to production. “The organization of the regatta and the creation of a series follows the same principles,” he says. “You need passion, courage, preparation and the ability to combine people around vision. The skills that I studied, conducting international loan events, public relations, the construction of cultural ties, now help me manage large-scale productions. It is about taking skills trained in one area and using them in another. ”
