Cowboys coach to meet with George Pickens after reaction to ex-NFL’s critique

Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer vowed to intervene in the midst of a feud between one of the team's star receivers and a former NFL quarterback.

The Cowboys fell to 6-6-1 on the season after losing to the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. The 44–30 loss put Dallas' playoff hopes in jeopardy. Former Seattle Seahawks star and current NFL analyst Richard Sherman attended the Prime Video broadcast and suggested George Pickens appeared “disinterested” and took a “distant” attitude.

Pickens picked up on Sherman's criticism and responded on social media, where he directed a series of insults and insults at the retired quarterback. Pickens later appeared to delete the post, but his initial actions still prompted Schottenheimer to commit to looking into the expansion situation.

“I am aware of what was allegedly posted there,” Schottenheimer told reporters Friday. “I haven't talked to him yet. I understand that it was deleted, but I will talk to him, just check on him. Again, unfortunately, this is what we face in this profession. But I haven’t talked to him, but I will.”

Pickens finished Thursday's game with 37 receiving yards. While the ex Outstanding Georgia Typically a deep threat, he failed to complete a pass of more than 10 yards for the first time in a game this year.

In his post, Pickens seems to argue that Sherman should have taken the Lions' defensive strategy into account, writing in part, “It's funny because I thought former players knew that,” before claiming that Sherman: “WHO, BY THE WAY, Ain't Shh Without A LEGION OF BOOM.”

After the game, Pickens admitted he could have played better.

“Personally, I can’t just disappear,” Pickens told reporters after the game. All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb left in the second half with a head injury, causing Pickens to draw more attention from the Lions' defensive backfield.

Schottenheimer later reviewed the film's performance and dismissed the idea that Pickens' effort was substandard. Instead, he acknowledged that all of the Cowboys' players did not coach or perform well enough to pull out a win on Thursday.

“I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough,” Schottenheimer said. “Basically, I'll judge George on his work, man. His work, he showed what an elite player he is and how much of a game changer he is. I have no questions.”

Pickens spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was sold to Cowboys last offseason. In just 13 games this season, Pickens has already reached career highs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
