Michael Edward Reagan, the eldest son of President Ronald Reagan, died on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after a battle with cancer. His death marks the loss of a voice that worked for decades to preserve and promote the values, legacy and character of one of America's most revered presidents. Tributes have poured in across the Conservative movement in recognition of his unwavering commitment to sharing his father's ideals and encouraging younger generations to support them.
Michael Reagan played a central role in the work of the Young America Foundation (YAF), especially at the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara, California. For many years he was a regular participant in student meetings held at Rancho del Cielo, also known as the Western White House, and served as a powerful link between the life of President Reagan and the students who sought to learn from it.
Governor Scott Walker, President of the Young America Foundation, reflected deeply about Reagan's contributions, saying, “Michael Reagan was a wonderful inspiration to many of us. This was especially true of the students who listened to him in Young America Foundation programs at the Reagan Ranch, including our high school programs. He did much more than just share stories about his father. He challenged the next generation to share the values he espoused throughout his public life. He encouraged them to be happy warriors in the battle to uphold the founding principles of our republics”.
Walker also noted his personal connection to Reagan, recalling the first time he listened to him during a trip to the State Capitol in Madison, Wisconsin. “Years later, I got to know him personally when I became president of the Young America Foundation. He was a regular participant in our student programs in California. Michael and his family often returned to Rancho del Cielo for public and private events.” He also said their last conversation took place on December 22, 2025, during which Reagan discussed his health and expressed hope for an upcoming follow-up visit.
“Unfortunately for all of us, the Lord decided to call him home early. However, he and I also discussed his faith and devotion to Jesus. This should give us comfort during this difficult time, as he did with the Lord,” Walker added.
Andrew Coffin, YAF vice president and director of the Reagan Ranch, also paid tribute: declaring“This week we lost an American hero, a loyal son, a devoted father and grandfather. However, no look at Ronald Reagan was more important than the look at his son Michael. From the earliest days of this project, Michael has worked alongside the Young America Foundation to share his father's legacy and ideas with new generations.»
Coffin emphasized Michael Reagan's unique role in connecting younger generations with Ronald Reagan's legacy by describing how he routinely served as the opening speaker at YAF high school conferences. “Michael helped these future leaders better understand how Ronald Reagan's life on the ranch related to his character and values,” Coffin noted.
Coffin recalled Michael Reagan as a “uniquely gifted communicator” who preferred to speak without notes, explaining that “several times he tried to work from a script, the speeches ended in failure.” Similar to the former president, he “spoke in parables.” Coffin observed that “vignettes from Michael's childhood helped illuminate his father's character, his faith, his love of his country, and even his tax policies.” Students “gravitated toward the same sense of authenticity that made his father such a successful leader.”
Michael Reagan's social influence extended beyond YAF and talk radio. As president of the Reagan Legacy Foundation, he was a prominent conservative voice defending and promoting his father's philosophy. In an exclusive 2024 release with Breitbart NewsReagan expressed strong support for Donald Trump, arguing that the former president is not stepping on Ronald Reagan's legacy but that America needs a strong leader again to “right the ship.” He said: “Trump doesn't step on my father. My father took the time to fix it. We had to fix it again. And we need another strong leader. And thank God for Donald Trump.” Reagan also praised Trump for destroying and rebuilding the Republican Party “with a new look, with new people” and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant, warning that “the left is not relaxing.”
Following the news of his passing, a wide range of conservative voices expressed their condolences. Daily Wire political columnist Cameron Arcand wrote“Terrible news. Many of us remember his @YAF performances. He will be missed.” Commentator Mary Walter described Reagan was called “a gentleman and a very kind soul,” recalling their weekly conversations and the nightly messages he sent, oblivious to the time difference. Vince Coglianese, Editorial Director, Daily Caller: marked“A good man and radio host! I had the honor of interviewing him many years ago. Praying for him and his family.”
Floyd Brown, former radio host and writer, commented“Michael was the greatest advocate for saving the ranch from being sold to developers. He was instrumental in preserving his father's beloved ranch.” Guy Benson of Fox News said“Oh my God. What a nice, energetic guy. RIP.” YAF Communications Director Spencer Brown confirmed“Michael Reagan was a great man who helped generations of YAF students understand who Ronald Reagan really was. His influence, stories, warm heart and intelligence will long be remembered.”
Gabriella Hoffman, director of the Independent Women's Forum, Center for Energy and Conservation, general“Very sad to learn of @ReaganWorld's passing. I met him when I was a student activist @yaf many moons ago. I am forever grateful to Mr. Reagan's father, President Ronald Reagan, for allowing my parents, Soviet fugitives, to settle in America. Rest in peace, sir.” Journalist Katie Pavlich stated“Saddened by the news of the passing of Michael Reagan. What a life he led and always with a big smile. Rest in peace, one of the best.” Daniel DiMartino, founder of the Dissident Project, wrote“Rest in peace, Michael. Thank you for all you did to educate young Americans.” Corey Uden of the California Republican Party added“RIP @ReaganWorld. It was an honor to meet you last year.”
Michael Reagan is survived by his wife Colleen, son Cameron and daughter Ashley. As Andrew Coffin came to the conclusion in his tribute: “Michael, you weren't just treading water. You have made a difference. Your voice has made this country stronger and freer, and with your commitment to sharing your father's lessons with young Americans, you are confident that we will leave it in capable hands.»
