Chicago star Connor Bedard was injured on a last-second faceoff in Friday night's 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues and will miss his team's game the next day.
With 0.8 seconds remaining, Bedard attempted to break the tying run to give Chicago one last chance, but was picked off by Blues center Brayden Schenn. He grabbed his right shoulder and immediately headed to the locker room, accompanied by his coach, while his teammates remained on the ice and on the bench.
“He won't play tomorrow,” Chicago coach Jeff Blashill said of the team's home game against Detroit on Saturday night. “Tomorrow I won’t know more information, so don’t ask me tomorrow. I'll know more at some point over the weekend, so I'll probably have more information on Monday.”
When asked whether Bedard's injury would be short-lived, Blashill did not provide details.
“I would hate to say this without knowing the information,” he said. “Until we get the information, he won't play tomorrow.”
Bedard ranked fifth in the NHL in points heading into the game and had an assist for Chicago in the loss. He now has 12 goals and 25 assists.
He became desperate when the Blues scored with a half-second on the clock. Blashill said he would have to watch the play again, but was initially under the impression that nothing dirty had happened in the play.
“Honestly, I think it’s a terrible accident,” Blashill said, “to be honest.”
