Comedian Nikki Glaser describes “very delicate” balance of jokes as she returns to host Golden Globes

Comedian Nikki Glaser made history last year as the first woman to host Golden Globe solo. She I'm coming back this year hold the awards ceremony for the second time.

In an interview on Tuesday's “CBS Mornings” Glaser described the awards show's joke process as “strategic”, saying: “You have to be very sensitive about making jokes that won't ruin anyone's night, but you also want to give people at home… something to laugh at, and you want to make jokes at people's expense that they really want you to laugh at.”

She added that finding the perfect jokes for the show is “one of… the hardest jobs I've ever had.”

Glaser said she's a big fan of the celebrities up for awards and said this year is a little different because she grew up admiring a lot of the actors.

“It’s easy for me to destroy, like a new group of actresses and actors who are younger than me. It's like, OK, I can laugh at you, I'm like a veteran. But when it's like the people I grew up admiring, it's… oh my gosh, it's so… different approach this year.”

In preparation last year, Glazer reached out to some celebrities to see if the joke had gone too far. She said she hasn't done that yet and may have a different strategy.

“There are certain people I don’t know what I would say about. It's almost like some of these jokes, you think, OK, if I got their number, would I text them and ask? Then I'll go, you know what? They might say no, and I know the joke isn't that bad, and… I'd rather apologize later at the party when they're drunk,” she said with a laugh.

During rehearsal, Glaser found one joke that the audience doesn't always like.

“I try my monologue about Los Angeles in clubs here, and even any jokes about Julia Roberts are not there. You can't laugh at America's sweetheart,” Glaser said. “Whatever I say about it, it's the most polished joke I've worked so hard on because it's so delicate.”

The Golden Globes air Sunday, January 11 on CBS and Paramount+.
