Indianapolis ColtsThe 2025 season risks ending on a sour note as the defender Daniel Jones went down with a torn Achilles in Sunday's loss to Jacksonville Jaguars. With the division and a playoff berth on the line, the 8-5 Colts are considering bringing back the quarterback who started for them the last time Indianapolis made the postseason.
According to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.Colts host Philip Rivers to training this week to see if he could potentially join their squad. Rivers turned 44 on Monday and was named a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame just last month.
If Rivers, now a grandfather, were to sign with the Colts, he would be joining a revamped team of quarterbacks led by a rookie. Riley Leonard And Brett Rypien. Rivers' eldest daughter, Holly, is several months older than Leonard.
There are four quarterbacks eligible to play in an NFL game who are 44 years of age or older: Tom BradyVinny Testaverde, Warren Moon and Steve DeBerg. Next Sunday will mark 1,800 days, or nearly five years, since Rivers last took a snap in an NFL game, according to CBS Sports Research.

Rivers last played for the Colts in 2020. He led Indy to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth, throwing for 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Former fourth overall pick in the 2004 draft. NFL Draft spent 16 of my 17 NFL seasons with San Diego, which became Los Angeles Chargers. An eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Rivers went 134-106 as a starter and currently ranks seventh all-time in passing yards (63,440) and sixth in passing touchdowns (421).
How will this affect Rivers' Hall of Fame eligibility?
For the first time, Rivers is eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was recently among 26 modern-era candidates named as semi-finalists. Drew Brees and fellow 2004 draftee Eli Manning are the other modern-era quarterbacks currently eligible for next summer's induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio.
The Hall of Fame requires a player to retire for five seasons before being eligible for induction. Under those rules, Rivers will no longer be eligible to take over this year if he decides to sign with the Colts. If he plays this season, he could be inducted into the Rivers Hall of Fame. I would have dropped itThis means he will not be eligible to take office until 2031.
This offseason, Rivers said on The Dan Patrick Show that he was receiving interest from teams in 2021 and 2022. New Orleans Saints even called Rivers and Drew Brees in 2021.
“The reason I had to wait a little bit was because there was a November/December couple in 2021 and 2022 where I was ready,” Rivers said. “I put on shoulder pads and a helmet a few times, threw them in the yard and worked just in case. And there were several things that came close to this. But in the last two years I almost felt like I was done.”
However, it appears that Rivers is not 100% ready. There's still work to be done and hurdles to overcome, but there appears to be legitimate mutual interest between Rivers and the Colts.
